Single & Multi Engine Instrument Rating (level 5)NZ International Commercial Pilot Academy has been granted approval by NZQA under section 251 of the Education Act 1989 to provide Single or Multi Engine Instrument Rating (Level 5).
This a Level 5, 50 credit, NZQA Approved Programme of 21 weeks duration designed specifically for International Students.
Aim
- To provide the skills and knowledge to learners, necessary to achieve an Instrument Rating in Single or Multi-engine aircraft entitling the holder to legally operate a single or multi-engine aeroplane in New Zealand under instrument flight rules including a GPS endorsement.
Content
- The training scheme comprises ground and flying requirements for an Instrument Rating in a single or a multi-engine aircraft including GPS and ILS approach.
Theory includes:
- Air law, navigation & flight planning, instruments & navigation aids
- GPS use and GPS & ILS approach
- Practical flying for an instrument rating.
Entry requirement
To be eligible for entry to this programme, applicants must;
- Hold a current Commercial Pilot Licence
- Be over 18 years of age
- Be competent in spoken English to meet CAANZ requirements
- Hold an Aviation Class 1 medical certificate,
- Meet the CAANZ 'Fit & Proper Person' status requirements
- Hold a current Multi-Engine Aircraft Type Rating if electing Multi Engine option
In addition, International applicants must:
- Where English is a second language, have achieved an IELTs score of 5.5 or higher
- Applicants will be interviewed prior to acceptance with a focus on career pathway, health, age and literacy.
Outcome
- Graduates will be able to exercise the instrument flight privileges provided for by CAANZ in New Zealand.

- There are no standards associated with this programme - all standards are as set out in NZCAA Part 62 and associated Advisory Circulars.

Delivery method
- CAANZ theory subjects and Commercial Pilot Academy modules theory components are taught in a ground school supported by written and e course materials, with practice assessments for each subject. Supporting exercises will include assignments, case studies and observation of real air operations.
- Practical flying is taught one to one as a sequence of practical flying exercises in simulators and aircraft. Each flight includes a pre-flight briefing and post-flight de-briefing.
Assessment Methods
- CAA theory subjects are assessed via external exams conducted by ASL under CAANZ approval.
- Flying competencies and knowledge improvement are certified by A or B Category Flight Instructor.
- Instructors and flight test are conducted by a CAA approved Flight Examiner.
Duration
- Total length including holidays - 21 weeks
- Total Teaching weeks excluding holidays - 18 weeks
- Self-Directed Learning Hours - 7.5 hours average per week
- Total Learning Hours - 500 hours
